Stories of Lost Children

My Angel Hannah
by Crystal, Seymour, Tennessee, U.S.A.

I had my first child on May 1, 2000 and then I found out I was pregnant again a few months later. My second child was born on May 7, 2001. Her name was Hannah Jordan she was so small and beautiful. We had her home for only three weeks when she started getting sick. So we took her to the doctor and they admitted her to the hospital because she wasn't getting enough oxygen in her body. Over the next couple of days she was getting worse so they decided it was best to transfer her Children's Hospital in Knoxville where they found out that she had pertussis. On June 11, 2001 they discovered that her heart and lungs were not working right so they decided then to transfer her to Vanderbilt University Hospital where they put her on the ECMO machine. She was doing so much better but something happened at about 3:00 a.m. on June 19, 2001. Me and my husband got back to the hospital at about 4:30am and the doctor said there was really nothing else that they could try. So we went to call our parents and when we came back in the room the doctor was putting a needle in her abdomen and pulling off a bunch of blood. Somehow the force of the machine had busted her heart and blood was filling in her abdomen. The doctor said there was no way to fix it. So she was taken off the machines and placed in my arms where she died at 5:37 a.m. on June 19, 2001. Me and my husband just sat and held her for the longest time. We waited until his and my parents could get there to say good-bye to Hannah. She was only six weeks old. Saying good-bye to her was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It's not even been two months since she has been gone and it feels like it was just yesterday. There is a little angel in heaven looking down on my husband and my other daughter Shyla Rhea. Hannah we love and miss you so much.

Mommy and daddy and big sister Shyla.
