Stories of Lost Children

My Little Prince Edie
by Kellie, Hervey Bay, Q.L.D, Australia

It was a Monday morning when I went to my doctor and found out I was pregnant. It was the happiest day of my life. My husband and I were very surprised that I fell pregnant so quick as we had only been trying for a couple of months and the doctor warned me beforehand that I may take a while to fall pregnant after being on contraception. As time went on, I had blood tests, ultrasounds and many checkups with the doctor and everything was perfect with our little boy. At 6 months I was put into hospital with a slight infection and the doctors reassured me that bubby was fine. I left hospital the next day and I was fine. At 7 months I had a baby shower the weekend before I lost my little boy and the whole time a bad feeling kept going over me like I shouldn't be accepting these presents. On the Monday I went to the doctor for a checkup and she was a bit concerned about my blood pressure so she sent me up to the maternity ward. Again the doctors reassured me that the baby was fine and they just wanted to keep me in for a couple of days. On the Tuesday night my mum came in to see me and I was worried. She said to me "you're worried about what happened to your auntie aren't you?" (my auntie had a stillborn a long time ago). And I said straight out "Yes I am!" During the evening I was getting braxton hicks and they were in timing but I thought it was just part of the pregnancy. Late that night the midwife came in to check his heartbeat. At first she couldn't find it and I thought it was just him playing around. She then decided to get another midwife to have a go and she couldn't find it either. I began to worry. They then had to get the doctor. He didn't have to tell me; I just looked at him and said "I've lost him havn't I?" The next day (4th July 2007) I gave birth to him. We then found out that the placenta had ruptured and the doctors reassured me that it was nothing I did wrong as I did question myself.
