Stories of Lost Children

My Little Angel Jayden
by Rebecca, Cape Girardeau, MI, U.S.A.

My name is Rebecca Williams and this was my 4th pregnancy. I miscarried 2 babies and then I had my son Christian. He was a beautiful healthy boy. Well I wanted all my kids to be close in age so a year and a half later I got pregnant and I was happy. Well I was 5 months along and my whole life changes. I went to see if he was a boy or girl and they couldn't get a clear picture of his heart. So I went to a high risk pregnancy doctor and he did an ultrasound. Well he knew there was something wrong with his heart. They told me to go to a cardiologist in St. Louis. Well I went and they told me his aortic valve was narrow and I would have to come back at 34 weeks along to see if it was still there. Anyway I went to the obgyn doctor when I was 34 weeks and I told him I didn't feel him move. Well he told me to go to St. Francis Hospital in Cape, MO. Well I did well and they did an ultrasound and knew something was wrong because he wouldn't move and told me I had to stay there overnight.

The next morning they did another ultrasound and told me the same thing. Well they did an emergency C-Section the same morning and they found out the cord was wrapped around his neck twice and a true knot in his cord. He was alive and he still had problems. My husband and I told the doctors that the aortic valve was narrow and to check it out and they came back to me and said he had a normal heart. Well we knew he didn't so we asked them if there was any other hospital with better technology and the best doctors and they told us that this hospital was the best for him. Well they waited for a day and a half and my friend and I were going to see him. We had to scrub in and we went in there and they had a fly unite and an incubator and had him in there already. I asked them what was going on and they said we're going to take him to St. Louis Children's Hospital. I said I'm going to get the father and I went back to my room and asked him if he knew anything about this. He said "no" so a couple hours later I got discharged and went up to St. Louis Children's Hospital and they told us that they were sorry for the other hospital and handed us a consent form to fly him to St. Louis. We said he's already here and I'm not signing anything. Anyway, they told us on June 13th 2007 that he had suffered a stroke on the left side of the brain and the left side of the brain was dying. Well we had a choice to let him live and be a vegetable for the rest of his life or let nature take its course. Well this was the hardest choice I've ever had to make. We chose to let nature take its course anyway. He was born June 6th 2007 and died June 13th 2007.

Well I keep asking myself if St. Francis listened to me about his heart problem and sent him to St. Louis the day he was born they could have saved his life. The doctor at St. Louis Children's Hospital told us that he had the stroke between birth to 36 hours of life and everything was caused by his heart problem and they could have done the heart surgery the first day he was born.

Jayden gave us his all but he wasn't strong enough to fight the stroke.
