Stories of Lost Children

Our Little Noodle
by S. N., Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Our daughter was born a little more than 4 weeks early on Feb 6th 2004. The doctors thought she was very healthy and we were sent home after 4 days.

Our daughter Dakota stopped eatting a week later. Dakota was sent to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. We were there for two weeks. All the tests; EEG's, CT Scans, Brain Ultrasounds, and the MRI showed that her brain was in very bad shape. The doctors said that she got a virus from me. I was what you would call asymptomatic (no signs of this virus) and 60% of us out there don't even know we have it. This virus was killing off my baby's brain slowly and painfully. The doctor said there was not a chance for her to have a normal life if she made it. So my husband, the doctor and I made the choice to stop treatment because it was not making her better.

So on March 3rd 2004 we brought her home to die peacefully in our arms; not in a hospital. We got home at 4 p.m. Those last few hours we spent with her were hard. Our Dakota died at 10:30 p.m. that night in my arms with my husband, my best friend, and the doctor around her.

It has only been two weeks now and I find it very hard to get up every day. I still have not put any of her clothes away that she never got to wear. We had her cremated and now she is home with us for now. I miss our "Little Noodle".

In memory of Dakota Marie Summer Newton. Born Friday February 6th 2004 and died in my arms on Wednesday March 3rd 2004.
