Stories of Lost Children

Charlie, Mama loves you around the world and back!
by L.G., Harkers Island, NC, U.S.A.

Charles Douglas Guthrie was born on June 27, 1997. Although his daddy, big brother, big sister, and I were anxious to have him become part of our family, we were not really expecting him quite so soon.

I had experienced some problems during my pregnancy with Charlie, the first of which was an abnormal AFP test. It was a long 2 weeks wait after the amnio, but we finally found out that we were going to have a perfectly healthy baby boy.

Because of my high blood pressure later in the pregnancy I had a series of medications designed to develop Charlie's lungs....which proved to be a smart move. Although Charlie's birthweight was just 3 lbs. 14 oz. he only had to stay in the NICU for 4 days and was transferred to our neighborhood hospital just "to grow". He came home weighing just under five pounds.

Charlie never really acquired much of an appetite but ate enough to grow sufficiently. Then, around 4 months old, he started to experience a problem with diarrhea, which would unfortunately be a part of the rest of his life.

Besides letting people know about this special little boy, I have another reason for posting here. I would like to make people aware of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. For those of you who are not familiar with this (and most people, including doctors, are not)please visit their website. I will try to explain some of the things that our family experienced during Charlie's "episodes" but mostly I want just to tell about my blond haired, blue eyed boy....
Until next time,

Lisa (Charlie's Mom)
