Stories of Lost Children

My Dylan
by Carly, Slaughter, LA, U.S.A.

On Feb 12,2003 my labour pains started, but I did not realize it. By 5:00 a.m. the next morning I could not take it anymore. I woke up my mom and told her it was time. We called the the doctor on call but he told me to wait until my contractions were 3 to 5 minutes apart. If that did not happen by 9:00 a.m., to go and see my doctor.

By 9:00 am my contractions were 10 minutes apart. We arrived at the doctors office. He listened to Dylan's heart beat and it was very slow. The doctor sent me to the hospital to be monitored.

After my arrival, they hooked me up to the monitor. I heard the nurse say that they couldn't find a heartbeat. They paged the doctor. I kept asking what was wrong with my baby and they told me his heart wasn't beating. They wheeled me into a room to do an emergency C-Section. Then they told me Dylan was gone; he wasn't moving and his heart had stopped. At that moment I thought I was dreaming; this was not happening to me. I wanted to scream and save my baby but I just layed there; my mom was yelling at the doctor. I couldn't believe my son was gone. He was 4 days overdue. If they had only taken him on his due date, my son would be alive. I got to hold him and take pictures of him; to touch his hair, kiss his face, but it's not enough.

I miss him so terribly. Dylan was my first and only child. With the exception of a few close family members, I went through the pregnancy, birth and death of my child alone. The father was not there, nor do I think he cares. I love my son; I miss my son. I'm not sure how much more of people's well-meaning thoughts and words I can stand.
