Stories of Lost Children

Max
by Megan von Brix, Burnie, Tasmania, Australia

Our little Max had just turned 2 years old. He loved his 5mth sister, who will never know his joy. He was an extremely active, very healthy and above average toddler. On 8-6-02 we took him to the GP with a temperature and he wasn't himself. I was told there was nothing wrong. Later we went to the hospital with a very high temperature. The hospital admitted him but did not treat him; they did not examine or do any tests to find out what might be wrong. Despite my pleadings, pointing out he was becoming brain damaged each minute, his continual internal convulsions and clear signs of bleeding to death, the Dr's declared there was little wrong with him. He was given Panadol for 30 hours. He died slowly in front of us.

When he became brain dead we were flown to Melbourne Children's Hospital. Here they discovered his condition, Pneumococcol Meningitis. They operated in vain and we turned off his life support. Our son was killed slowly in front of us; we knew he was dying, we trusted, we were betrayed. No forgiveness for this the most terrible of crimes. Max has had to pay with his life.

Parents love your children, you never know how long you will have them for.
