Stories of Lost Grandchildren
Layla
by K.C., Elk Mills, MD, U.S.A.
My granddaughter, Layla, was born on 2/21/02. My daughter had a difficult pregnancy, but the birth was good and beautiful. Except for the usual childhood illnesses, Layla was a happy and healthy baby. My daughter and her husband were wonderful parents and Layla's life was great. Their little family went for a vacation about 7/17/04 about 5 hours away. On 7/19/04 my daughter called me saying Layla was very ill and asking me to come to Norfolk, Va. I arrived hours later to find Layla brain dead and on life support until organ donation could be arranged. I couldn't believe it but apparently she had a hidden infection in her body which crossed into her brain and killed her quickly. We sat up most of the night holding her little body and saying good bye. I cannot believe that our little "Ladybug" is gone. Her pictures are all we have and they show a sweet beauty full of love and life. I am finding my way through the grief slowly, but my daughter and her husband are devastated. I only hope they can find some peace and comfort soon. It is difficult to watch my daughter's suffering. The only consolation is that Layla lived a happy life and experienced much love in her short time.
