Stories of Lost Children

My Christmas Baby
by Shannon Pearson, Independence, KY, U.S.A.

Meghan was born Christmas Day 2004. She was the best present I could have ever got. We had a scare in the birthing room. We found out that she was breech. We went down to the ER for an emergency C-Section but she stopped breathing. The doctors said their was no time and I had to deliver her on my own. It hurt like h###, but it was worth it. She was my blonde hair blue eyed baby. Her brother and sisters are all brown haired and brown eyed. She was our little princess. She never gave us any trouble; just acted like a normal baby. On July 23, 2006, our world came crashing down. It started out like a normal day. I had to work that day so I took the kids to their maw-maw and paw-paw's house. I gave them all kisses and told them I would see them at 6:30. At 4:30 my mil called me at work and said Meghan was breathing funny, throwing up; just not acting normal. So I left work, before I went to mil's house I stopped at Wal-mart to pick up some Pedialyte for her stomach. Maybe if I would have gone straight there maybe Meghan would still be here. When I got there I knew right away that something was really wrong with her. She was breathing funny and covering her mouth like she had to throw up but nothing was coming out. I decided just to be safe to take her to the ER. I called my husband and told him I was going to the hospital.

On the way there I had to keep talking to Meghan because she would try to go to sleep so I also had the radio turned up. I was so scared. When I got her out of the car, I said "Meghan, look at mommy" and she did and then I told her that I loved her. When we got to the registration desk she lost consciousness in my arms. There was a nurse walking by and she ripped Meghan from my arms. I had no idea what was going on. I called my husband and told him that I needed him there now. In about 45 minutes to an hour almost all of the family was in the waiting room. We had no idea what was wrong with her. They took an x-ray of her chest and it showed that she had an enlarged heart; we had no idea. She never acted sick, she was always happy, played and fought with her brother and sisters. Just a happy 18 month old baby. She was breathing on her own for a while and seemed like she would pull through. They called air care for her to be flown to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. Before they got her she was breathing shallower. Then air care got here and tried working on her but they said she was to weak to go. The doctors said that she wasn't in any pain and that there was nothing more they could do for her. So we decided to let her go.

She passed away at 7:21 p.m. The nurses and doctors were excellent; they let us stay in the room with her as long as we wanted. I got to rock her, and so did all of the family that wanted to. The hospital gave us some pictures that they took of her. They took her hand and foot prints. gave us a blanket that they wrapped her in. She had blonde curly hair and so they gave her a lock of it. I miss her so much. She would have turned 2 on Christmas Day.

We love you Meghan, Mommy, Daddy, Hannah, Lexie, and Joey
