Stories of Lost Children

My Little Cheekie Charlie
by Janis, Bradford, Yorkshire, England

On October 15th 1987, our beautiful daughter Charlotte was born. 6lb2oz and perfect in everyway. She was the apple of our eye, and was loved so very much by all the family. May 1st 1988, was the day she was Christened in the church I was christened and my husband and I were married. It was a beautiful day, and charlotte captured everyones heart. One week later on Sunday 8th May 1988 my husband and I took her for a walk. Snuggled up warm in her silver cross pram, she slept content and happy.

As we always did, we waited patiently at the zebra crossing for all the traffic to stop. When it was clear and safe we started to cross. Halfway across a car came up from behind another, which we could not see, and hit the pram. Charlotte fell out , and started to cry. I scooped her in my arms and the ambulance took us to Leeds General Infirmary. She looked perfect as she slept, just one little mark above her lips. She slept, and as she breathed aided by a machine, we got the results her brain had died. We agreed for her heart, lungs, kidneys and cornea's to be used in transplants. Hopefully someone somewhere is health and happy with Charlottes help. 12th May 1988 we said goodbye as the machine was switched off, and she fell into her final sleep. The motorist got fined £250 and banned for one year, we got a lifetime of heartache.

Charlotte would be 19 this October, and since my husband and I had two more beautiful daughters, aged 17 and 15. My husband and I divorced 3 years ago, and I am now engaged to a wonderful man, and happy. There is just one love missing from our lives, our little Cheeky Charlie Chipmunk as a called her. I know that I was so very lucky having Charlotte in my life for 7 months, and for having her in my heart forever more.

dedicated to my beautiful little daughter, Charlotte Victoria born 15th October 1987.
