Incomplete Family
by T., Bladensburg, MD, U.S.A.

May 24, 2004 I found out I was pregnant with twins and I was only 17 years old at the time. I just knew I was sick and when I went to the ER on May 10th at Walter Reed Medical Center they told me but I did not believe the doctors. I was excited when it was confirmed on May 24th but scared I Knew it would be difficult due to me being nothing but 130 pounds and 5'3. I knew it was going to be a challenge.

I was 2 months when I found out and at the end of August when I was getting contractions I knew something was wrong.

August 31, 2004 I had my first child who was a girl named Kirs'lynn Kennedi Tanyetta Federick at 9:02 p.m. via vaginal delivery. She weighed nothing but a pound and was 12 inches long. Immediately she was taken to the N.I.C.U. Five hours later at 2:07 a.m. I had a baby boy who I named K'lynn George Lee Federick via emergency C-Section. He weighed 1.3 pounds and he also was 12 inches. Believe it or not the doctors told me my children would not make it past a hour but they did. Every week we would celebrate their birthday's and I stayed by my children's side every chance I could. My daughter lived for 47 days after she had a very rocky road. She had countless surgeries and been in every failure possible.

But October 17, 2004, my daughter could not handle the pressure they were putting on her and continued downhill until I had to make the biggest decision ever in my life and withhold support from my daughter. I held her for the 2nd time in my life and there she was beautiful as ever. She did not last 2 minutes without her intubated and I witnessed her struggle to breathe one last time and I could not do anything about.

Afterwards I took pics with my daughter for the 1st time ever. I gave her, her 1st and last bath. Her brother survived it all that came with being 4 months early. But My little KK was his angel because she endured the worst for her little brother. But now I just feel like a incomplete family!
