Stories of Lost Children

Almost 2 Years Later
by Susan, Barnegat, NJ, U.S.A.

I lost my son Robbie 3 days after his 15th Birthday. We were getting ready for bed, my daughter had come by the boys were watching Monday night football and it was getting late, time for bed at 11:40 I said good night at 12:05.

I was jumping from my son's bedroom window into a neighbors arms. We couldn't tell at the time that the entire house was on fire, the smoke and carbon monoxide were threatening our thoughts and our air. My son Robbie went to the stairs; I heard him fall to the front door which was locked. No officer could seem to get in; they were not equipped. The fire department arrived and Robbie was pulled from the front door of my house at 2:20 a.m. He was burned beyond recognition; I was never able to see him again.

I hurt every day. It seems that lately I am reliving the fire and the pain is just like it was in the beginning. I'm angry at times, but try desperately to put it away. Is it still supposed to feel like it just happened?

I miss him soooooooooooooooooooooooo much and am still trying to make some sort of sense of all of it. We lost everything that day, our entire home and our son, brother to Danny, Gregory and Kelly.
