Stories of Lost Children

Our Little Fighter Ayaan
by Robila, Manchester, , UK

My story starts on the 4th Febuay 04. I was 19 weeks pregnant. I started to bleed so I went to the hospital and I ended up in the early pregnancy ward. I had a emergency scan and I was told that my babies foot was trap in my cervix which was pushing the membrane through. I was told I was having a miscarriage but I had no pain and I could still feel my baby move. The next day the doctors decided that they were going to push my baby back and stitch my cervix up. After the second day my membrane started to come through the little gap that was left and I went back in surgery to get stitched up again. I was then put on bed rest. As I got to 23 weeks, my discharge got very watery and then my pain started. I was back in hospital. They couldn't understand why I was having pain, so to be safe, they gave me steroid injections. My pains carried on, coming and going, until I got to 24 weeks and I started to bleed again. They found out I had got a bad infection and there was no amniotic fluid around my baby so I had to be induced.

On the 12th March 04 I had a tiny little baby boy and we named him Ayaan. He weighed in at 1lb 4oz. He was sent straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit. Ayaan was doing good for the first week until he got a chest infection and it was getting worse. His pressures on the ventilation machine was going high and his oxygen requirments was up to 100%. His xray showed that he had Chronic Lung Disease due to his premature birth and it was getting worse day by day. The doctors told us he wasn't going to make it and to call all our relatives to see him for the last time, but he proved them wrong and pulled through.

After a couple of weeks the same thing happened again and he pulled through a it again. In total 3 times this happened and he pulled through, but his lungs still didn't improve. Ayaan had premature diabetes so he was on insuline he had 11 blood transfusions 2 lots of steroid courses and many different types of antibiotics he was put on a osalator and a niticoxyide to improve his chances.

Ayaan got to 4.5 months and he was growing like a normal baby and he was so handsome he looked just like his father. As Ayaan's lungs were growing, his lungs were growing damaged tissue instead of good.

Ayaan had another infection because he got so big he had to be sedated to stop him from fighting with the ventalation machine. I just didn't want to leave him that night but i had to leave to look after his older sister so I kissed him goodnight and I put him to sleep.

When we returned the next day we greeted Ayaan. We were only there for 2 minutes and he started to desat and then his heart rate came down. Doctors and nurses tried every thing they could to bring him round but it was no good. The doctor told me to hold him for the last time before he died. As I held him he died in my arms. We kind of knew that he was only with us temporary but we always wished for a miracle that he would pull through.

Ayaan died on 17th July 04 weighing at 8lb 1oz. We still havn't come to terms that our son left us so soon. We thought he would of come home because he pulled through the worst and he got so far.

Ayaan will always be a part of our family. He will be deaply missed but forever in our hearts.

We're so greatful we spent the little time we did with Ayaan. He taught us so much on how much we take for granted in our lifes. I would like to thank the nurses and doctors at St. Marys Hospital, Manchester, UK for helping our son in ever possible way. Thank you
