Stories of Lost Children

Our Angels - Mercy and Grace
by Casey Whiteaker, Bartlett, TN, U.S.A.

Everything was going so well with my pregnancy and I was so excited when I found out at 6 weeks that genetics had proven itself once again. TWINS!!!! Just like my granny and her granny and..... Everyone kept saying how unbelievably big I was getting, so quick. The doctors were not concerned, why should I be. People also said that they didn't know how such as skinny and little woman like myself was going to posssibly carry twins. I would explode. Everything was going great. My cervix was nice and thick, the girls were kicking and moving. My last doctor's appointment was on August 3rd (Tuesday) at 22 weeks. Everything looked great. So great that he didn't want to see my again until 26 weeks. On August 9th (Monday), I felt like the girls was just sitting kind of heavy - no big deal, then for some reason, something didn't feel right and I went to the bathroom to find that I had begun to bleed. We went straight to the hospital where we arrived at 7:00 am. By now, the blood flow was so heavy, my husbands blue jeans were only noticable as jeans from the legs below the knees. I was drenched.

I was immediately put on Magnesium Sulfate and put on my head in bed. The doctors was hoping gravity would make the sac fall back into my uterus. At 6:48, Mercy Ruth was born alive and very fussy. Her heart was strong, but her lungs were very weak. She survived for only 10 minutes.
At this point the doctors maxed out my dosage of the Magnesium until August 12th (Thursday), where they now put me on Precartia and some other medicine they gave me by 3 shots. These medicines allowed me to sleep through the night, by 6:00 am on August 13th (Friday), I was beginning to contract again.

This time the Magnesium could not have stopped it. At 12:26 pm, Grace Lucille was born. She had a weak heart, but stronger lungs than her sister. She survived for only 20 minutes.
We are just thankful we were able to meet these 2 precious little girls. They will always be our angels.
