Stories of Lost Children

Little Emma
by P.H., Miramichi, NB, Canada

On January 16, 2001, I found out that I was expecting my first child. My husband and I were so happy. Then on April 18, 2001 we found out that we were going to have TWINS!!! We were so excited and could hardly wait. I had a great pregnancy for being pregnant with twins; no complications or anything. I had just went off on maternity leave at 30 weeks.

Then suddenly at 32 weeks 4days my water broke early in the morning. I was scared. My husband rushed me to our local hospital where they then transported me about 1hr 15 minutes to a hospital with a NICU. So much so fast! After doing an ultrasound, they quickly rushed me to the OR for an emergency C-Section. I was put to sleep.

My little Emma was born at 2:10 pm and Alexa at 2:12 pm on July 26, 2001. When I awoke my world came crashing down. Alexa was doing fine, but they did not expect Emma to live. After 6 days went by they, decided to send Emma to the IWK in Halifax. There she was diagnosed with kidney failure, but after having an operation for dialysis, they said she would be a great candidate for a transplant in about 1.5 yrs. But she still was not out of the woods yet. On August 22, 2001 we found out that along with kidney failure, Emma had brain damage so severe that she would have no quality of life. We were so devastated that we could do nothing more for our little Emma. The last couple of weeks she was at the IWK, they airlifted Alexa from the Moncton Hospital to the IWK so that we could spend some family time together. We had the girls baptized together, took pictures and videotaped. Then on September 4, 2001 we came home to Miramichi so family and friends could come to see both girls at our local hospital. Emma then came off the respirator and became and Angel in her daddy's arms 21.5 hours later. She was a fighter to the end. She died peacefully on September 5, 2001 at 41 days old.

Our hearts ache everyday and there will always be a piece of our family missing. She is Alexa's Guardian Angel and will always be in her heart, as she say s now at the age of almost 3. We have since had another baby who is 10 months and her name is Bailey. Everything went fine with her. Nobody ever thinks they will have to go through something like this, I didn't think I would. There will be forever a piece of our hearts missing that nobody can ever replace and something that time has to help us heal. This is a tragedy the we will never get over but I hope one day we will learn to get through and smile at the happy memories that we do have.

We love and miss you very much EMMA!
