Stories of Lost Children

Our Angel
by Amber, Longview, TX, U.S.A.

Hunter was born on August 6, 2001. He looked just like an angel. He was a very happy baby and healthy baby. He never had any illness and the doctor said he was as healthy as the average child. I stayed at home with him and my 4 year old and I loved every moment of it. When Hunter was 18 months old, my husband and I decided it was time to go back to work. Thank goodness I didn't have a mom who worked so she was able to watch my children.

One morning (after about 2 weeks of my new job)I dropped my children off at my mother's. It was just like every other morning. I kissed and hugged the boys goodbye. After I was at work for 30 minutes, I got a phone call from my mom. She said Hunter was unconscious and the ambulance was on the way. As I drove to hospital I couldn't imagine what had happened. I didn't even ask my mom. All I thought about was getting to that hospital to see my baby.

I got to the hospital just as the ambulance pulled in. I saw my precious baby being wheeled in the hospital. My mom and husband got to the the hospital right after me. I finally got to ask my mom what happened. She was getting the boys ready to take to Mother's Day out and she had to go put Hunter's car seat in the car. Hunter wanted to go outside with her but it was cold and he started crying. She was outside for no more than a couple of minutes. When she walked back in, Hunter was laying under the coffee table unconscious. She tried to give him CPR (she is a nurse) but he didn't respond. She called 911. She asked my 4 year old what had happened and he said Hunter was crying so he gave him a cracker. But the paramedics and the doctors never found anything in his throat. The doctors worked on Hunter for over and hour and they couldn't bring him back. The doctor came into the room and I knew from the look on his face that Hunter was gone. I didn't understand what had happend. They couldn't find any signs of choking.

Well 3 months after Hunter's death we finally got the autopsy report. He died of Encephalomyelitis. I have never heard of this before. It is the swelling of the spinal cord or brain stem. The autopsy doctor said the chance of this happening was like your chance of winning the lottery. We were so shocked. He said there was no way of telling that there was anything wrong with him since he never showed any syptoms. He was always healty. My family doesn't believe in accidents though. Hunter was one in a million and God needed another angel in Heaven.

I look back at pictures of Hunter and in one of his pictures he does look just like an angel. I know I will see him again one day. He is now home in the arms of Jesus.
