Stories of Lost Children
Safe &; Warm Tonight
by Tom Clawson, Toledo, OH, U.S.A.
For my son Thomas M. Clawson who passed away a month before his 21st birthday. We miss & love you son. I close my eyes the sun comes up The sleep it never seems to be enough Every morning it gets harder to face the day Out this window I stare as time passes by Nothing to do but sit and wonder why A thousand tears hasn’t washed it all away Once upon a time when time stood still The pages of life were ours to fill Like the lines from a play that’s been erased Now I turn around and I hope to see you Laughing and joking like you used to do Instead, a lonely shadow takes your place I feel so empty inside without you here Don’t you know sometimes life can be so unfair? I’m wishing you could still be by my side But most of all I pray the road your on finds you safe and warm tonight, Finds you safe and warm tonight Every time it rains, I miss you more I swear that damn cloud won’t leave my door Just like a storm, it all comes undone somehow I always believed that it would never end No matter where we had gone or been If only I’d known back then what I know now But I guess sometimes we have to say goodbye Just like the stars that fall from the sky The tears we cry won’t stop the world from turning Another sleepless night without you my friend I close my eyes the sun comes up again I tell myself it’s not the end, who am I kidding? I feel so empty inside without you here Don’t you know sometimes life can be so unfair? I’m wishing you could still be by my side But most of all I pray the road your on finds you safe and warm tonight, Finds you safe and warm tonight Dad
