Stories of Lost Children

Our Beautiful Diana
by Abra Naber, Vacaville, CA, U.S.A.

Our daughter Diana was born and died January 1 2003. I had only casual and limited book knowledge of cervical incompetence; it now seems horrific that a perfect and beautiful little girl could be thrust into the world to die because of a stupid, pointless flaw in my body of which I had been ignorant of. It hurts so much that the body that was supposed to nurture her and protect her could betray her so cruelly. As one can see, this is something that I have yet to come to terms with. I had carried her for five months; my husband and I counted every little kick and movement. We called her our "little potato" and played "tater games" where my husband would tap on my tummy and wait and see if she would kick back. We read her stories and planned to have a home birth surrounded by family and friends. Then, New Years Eve, I was awakened by noisy neighbors and got up to use the restroom. I saw much blood and was rushed to the hospital. My husband called our family and friends when it became apparant that our little daughter would not survive. Diana was born at 6:22 a.m. and passed away peacefully at 7:15 a.m. New Years Day surrounded by our family and friends.

While I am pleased to know that a simple surgical procedure called a cervical cerclage will likely prevent another tragedy, I will always miss the lovely little girl that my husband and I were to hold in our arms for such a painfully brief time.

Mommy and Daddy miss you, our little Diana Lynne; please know that we will be waiting for you in the resurrection.
