Stories of Lost Children

A Darling on Earth
by Joyce M. Layton, Pearl, MS, U.S.A.

On 9/14/01 our son passed away due to self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. There are so many days since that event that I have just wanted to cover my head and not get up in the morning. After the funeral, I was told that I needed to get a hold of myself. Many people were concerned about me, and that all of the crying I was doing was upsetting them. My son was 33 years old and the father of three children ( 11, 8, 5). He was a good father and had previously been divorced and estranged from his 11 and 8 year old child. He lived out of state, and had little contact with any of the family. His new wife (Amy) controlled his entire life, and was going to leave him and get a divorce and take the 5 year old child. My son left a note: "I am in so much pain right now trying to deal with what is going on that I cannot take it anymore. Things just fell apart around me and there was nothing I could do."

Our life changed forever that day. Bo was our firstborn (I was 19 and my Husband was 20). Bo was the first grandchild on both sides of the family, and had lots of aunts and uncles. We treasured the fact that we were such a close family; our second child came along 2 years later, and that bond just continued. Our boys did the normal football, baseball, ra's, ffa, and all the extra activities at school and church---we participated in as many things as possible and tried to give them all we could afford. I was a stay-at-home mom, so I was able to enjoy all the childhood memories. I know that the pain will never leave us, and that our heart will forever be broken, and the only comfort I feel sometimes if a hug from my husband-----god will give us the strength to go on, and the ability to help others.
