Stories of Lost Children

Our Timothy
by Heather, Essex, Ontario, Canada

My son Tim was a shy child when he was little. When he got older, he was still shy and naive, but enjoyed the company of others. People always commented on his polite, gentle, and kind manner. He was always trying to please others and would say he was sorry a lot when he didn't need to. He especially had a difficult time saying, "Good-bye" when he would leave to go someplace. He'd sometimes spend another 5 minutes at the door before he would finally leave. He always smiled and never argued with his parents or elders. It's hard to believe, but we never faught and no harsh words were ever spoken. Tim became an adult, but was very needy and fragile. My husband and I worked hard at keeping him safe. He just didn't see the cause and effect of things in life. He was killed on December 31, 2001, in a gruelling automobile accident, on the way home from visiting with friends. We will never know the whole story, and will always wonder who was at fault in the accident. And why did it happen and all the "if onlys" don't help. You know, if only he left one minute earlier, or if only he went home another way, if only he went out with us that night, like we originally planned!!!

That's the problem we have. We keep asking ourselves what we could have done to prevent this. At age 21, our son's life on earth is over. We will never see him again on earth and we'll never watch him grow up, get married, etc. Our dreams for him are gone. Our two other sons, aged almost 20 and 18 years have to go through this torment too. i pray all the time and I know he is happy in heaven, but if I had the choice he'd be here now. How do people get through this? Thank you for listening through email.

Sincerely, Heather
