Stories of Lost Children

Our Little Lamb, Lucas
by Carol Hart, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Lucas was born on 19 July 2000 after a trouble-free pregnancy. What we didn't know was that he had Patau's Syndrome, a fatal chromosome disorder. We were told that his life would be measured in weeks rather than months or years. It came as such a shock - how could this be happening? There was no hope of a cure or treatment - all they could do was make him comfortable. We decided to take him home and do the best for him while he was still here. After 3 weeks at home, Lucas developed a virus and stopped breathing. We managed to resusitate him and took him to hospital. He was there was almost 2 weeks, and after several non-breathing episodes, his body finally gave out on 29 July 2000.

We miss him so much, it's like a hole has been punched inside me. If it wasn't for my husband, I might have killed myself - I just wanted to be with my son. Three months after Lucas' death I was pregnant again. After a very stressful pregnancy, I gave birth to our healthy daughter Eve. She has helped us deal with Lucas' death, and she will be told about her big brother as soon as she is old enough. We still wish he was here with us, but we know that would never have happened. I feel priviliged to have been his mother - he was a little fighter - even breathing was an effort for him. In the end he just couldn't say any longer. his body might not be here any more, but we feel his spirit around us - I'm sure he's looking after his Mum and Dad and his little sister.
