Stories of Lost Children

"Ireland" Forever

by Colleen Stuckless, Whitby, Ontario, Canada

On May 5, 2000 I was to be induced to delivery my second child. I went in at 9 a.m. and was induced by drugs and my water was broken. My husband, five year old daughter, mom and dad and brothers gathered at the hospital to see the new arrival.

At 4:15 I began to hemmorage and my doctor called for a section. Well, at 5:01 my little girl was born and was not breathing well on her own. The doctor had waited too long to do the section and my baby had bled too much.

We put her on life support. The doctors and nurses worked on her for 10 hours and then came to see she would never live a normal life. She would never walk, talk, smile, or anything. We had to take her off life support 10 hours after she was born. This was the hardest decision of my life. Meanwhile, I was hemmoraging and they nearly lost me as well. I did not see my little girl until the next day when she had already died. I held her in my arms with all my hopes and dreams now shattered. My husband held her up to the window in the hosptial to show her the birds and trees that she would never get a chance to see.

We buried her on May 9, 2000 and we visit here grave all the time. She is so missed and loved and wanted so much in our lives that we still feel this is not fair and cannot believe this has happened to us.

It has been over a year now and I don't think I will ever fully recover from our loss. Time does heal, but we never forget.

We named our little girl Erin. Erin means Ireland and this is why I called my story "Ireland Forever". Our little angel will live in our hearts forever and ever. She will never be forgotten.

God bless all the families who have suffered a loss.
